Garden Heating the Traditional Way

By Jenny Edwards With the increased new trend in outdoor living, which has undoubtedly been by TV Gardening DIY programs, we are all spending more money on our garden and patio areas. Creating an inspirational outdoor living space is something we can all do with a wide range of hard and soft landscaping products, lighting, decorations and garden accessories available widely on the market. Some of the latest innovations are in garden heating which allows us to spend more of our precious leisure time enjoying our garden or patio area, be it for entertaining family and guests or simply for relaxing. Fire pits and fire baskets are now widely available and not only bring the real flame, cosy atmosphere to your garden or patio but also create a great amount of heat, light and ambience. Traditionally fire baskets were sued as far back as the days of the Roman Empire as a form of heating for castles, manor houses and great stone buildings. Firepits are a more modernist refined and classy form of the original fire basket; however both have their own charms. Fire baskets and fire pits are simply filled with wood logs which are lit. They give off quite a lot of light, but more importantly their heat output is very high. They give the user a similar feel and create an ambience similar to sitting around a camp fire. The actual flame and glow of the fire are enough to make the user feel warm and cosy. You make more use of your garden and patio areas at night by using fire pits and fire baskets to warm up the whole area. Fire pits usually come with a steel mesh fire guard to stop sparks and embers from flying around, however the more traditional fire basket has gaps in between the steel which hold the logs. To counteract the fact that some embers will drop onto the floor below the fire basket, nearly all will come supplied with a ground tray to collect the ash and embers. The ash and embers in a fire pit simply collect within the bowl for easy disposal. They are a really great way to add charm, elegance, ambience, light and heat to any garden or patio area and are easy to use and maintain. Fire baskets are usually powder coated so they wont rust very easily. Fire pits come in either black powder coated bowls, solid copper bowls or stainless steel bowls, all of which sit on powder coated steel leg frames which are removable. The heat output for fir pits does not reduce or alter with the different bowl finishes, however placing the safety mesh guard over the top (for obvious safety reasons) will slightly reduce heat output. Some fire baskets are available with a steel barbecue mesh tray which sits on the top of the fire basket. This gives the fire basket a dual use for cooking as well as a formidable heat source. When choosing a fire pit or fire basket always takes into consideration the size of your garden or patio area. It is important to remember that you will probably want access around the fir pit or fire basket, so choose the right sized item, bearing this in mind. Care and maintenance of fire pits is very simply, although they can be left outside all year round it is highly recommended that the copper and stainless steel firepits are give a light coating of oil at the end of the summer season so that they retain their lustre. Covers are available and will have the obvious impact of lengthening the life of a fire pit. Powder coated fire baskets can be left outside in the garden or patio and wont rust, however steel fire baskets should be given a light coat of oil. If rust does appear on a steel finished fire basket, then this can be removed by using a wire brush, and then a light oiling should be applied. Always ensure that if oiling these items, only a light thin coat is applies. Fire pits and fire basket really are the cutting edge of outdoor living and life style this year. It is anticipated that they will be one of the biggest selling garden accessories and heat sources for this season, so if you want to enjoy your garden for longer when the sun goes down, they are a must for you. Enjoy long nights throughout the year with your fire pit or fire basket your life will take a new turn into outdoor living. Jenny Edwards is the operations manager of Arboreta Home & Garden Store. Peppermint – Nature’s Salve for Upper Respiratory Infections

By Mary Welty Peppermint (Mentha Piperita) Peppermint is a hybrid perennial plant which is found mostly cultivated but also found wild in moist soil in the eastern U.S. and in Europe. The whole plant has the characteristic smell of menthol. Peppermint definitely falls into my category of favorite herbs. While it is well known as an excellent stomach tonic for poor digestion, heartburn, nausea and insomnia. I have always found it an outstanding treatment for sinus inflammation and to relieve the constant coughing associated with bronchitis. Anyone paying attention to the news of late has heard the latest credo from the medical community; cough suppressants simply do not work and they should not be given to children. What then is a parent to do? Nothing is more disturbing than lying awake at night listening to the constant, painful coughing of a spouse or child. If over-the-counter cough suppressants are ineffective, what will work? My suggestion would be to try a very strong cup of peppermint tea. No, I am not a doctor, and before administering any type of treatment, you should first discuss it with a medical professional. That said, I have a history of bronchitis, generally brought on by a sinus infection. The constant sinus drainage collects in my chest and I begin to cough until it sounds like I am trying to hack up a lung. The chest tightens to the point where it is difficult to breath, and the constant coughing eliminates any hope of sleeping. When you suffer through that enough times, youre willing to try just about anything. Prepare a cup of very strong peppermint tea. If you are using tea bags, use at least 2 bags to a standard teacup. Allow the bags to steep until the tea is very dark. To take away a bit of the bitterness you can add a tablespoon of honey, which helps to sooth the throat. Dont just gulp the tea down. The greatest relief from this herbal remedy is obtained by inhaling the steam from of the tea. Hold the cup beneath your nose and inhale deeply. The fumes will instantly begin to reduce the swelling of the sinus passages, allowing you to breath easier. The combination of fumes and drinking the hot tea will also begin to loosen up the mucus in your chest, and coughing will become more productive. If your children happen to be anything like mine, they might be a bit resistant to drinking this tea, even with the honey. But rest assured, they will get almost as much benefit from simply breathing in the fumes as they will from drinking the tea. Set them up at the kitchen table with the tea under their nose. Drape a towel over their head and let them breath in the fumes until the tea cools. Peppermints’ natural calming properties make this a wonderful tea to drink just before bed. It will help you to relax and finally get a decent nights rest. Reference: The Herb Book, by John Lust,Benedict Lust Pub.1974 M.K. Significance Of Protein Intake In Weight Loss

By Dr. PJ Prakash Obesity has been increasing with an unprecedented rate in the United States and the rest of the world. There are approximately 65% overweight people in the U.S. and about 33% are clinically obese. This trend is also rising among children and teens. Due to the other health issues related with excess body weight, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardio-vascular diseases, obesity is perceived as an epidemic. In the recent years, there has been a significant discussion about the effect of high proteins foods on weight loss. The first person to suggest this correlation was Dr. Atkins through his Atkins diet program. This started a series of marketing campaigns by the food industry promoting their high protein foods. These marketing nudges seem to have brought a misconception among the common public that any food high in proteins would help to lose weight. This article highlights the importance of protein nutrition for general health and well being along with its role in weight regulation. A good protein intake is required for optimum heath as our muscles, which constitute about 40-50% of the human body mass, are mostly composed of proteins. Proteins are made of amino acids, which therefore are building blocks for the human body. The amino acids supplied from dietary protein are needed for synthesis of body proteins in muscle, organs, bone and skin, and for synthesis of enzymes, certain hormones, antibodies and a host of specialized products. Certain amino acids are essential for proper functioning of the body and the brain, such as tryptophan found in corn. In addition, proteins are essential as various specific proteins produced as a result of gene expression carry out all general functioning of the body. That is, the genetic pool of the human body that is composed of DNA and its associated genes gives rise to specific proteins that carry out their individual functions. Deficiencies of protein or one or more of the essential amino acids leads to reduced growth in children or loss of muscle mass in adults. A diet high in proteins has been related to weight loss and weight maintenance in various recent studies. Protein keeps the body satisfied for a longer time, the feeling of satiety. There is convincing evidence that a higher protein intake increases thermogenesis (the process of burning fat to produce body heat) and satiety as compared to diets of lower protein content. The weight of evidence also suggests that high protein meals lead to a reduced subsequent energy intake. Some evidence also suggests that diets higher in proteins result in increased weight loss and fat loss as compared to diets lower in protein. (1). Protein plays a key role in food intake regulation through satiety related to diet-induced thermogenesis. Protein also plays a key role in body weight regulation through its effect on thermogenesis and body composition. A high percentage of energy from dietary protein limits body weight (re)gain through its satiety and energy inefficiency related to the change in body composition. (2) Fairly recently, Dr. Frank Hu at the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, Massachusetts published a review on the effects of high protein diets on weight loss (1). Followings are the key points of this review: Although authors of some fad diets have advocated increasing dietary protein for weight loss, not until recently have studies begun to investigate the effects of high protein diets on weight loss. Convincing evidence exists that protein exerts an increased thermic effect when compared to fat and carbohydrate. Evidence is also convincing that higher protein diets increase satiety when compared to lower protein diets. Higher protein diets may facilitate weight loss when compared to a lower protein diet in the short term (within 6 months). But long-term data are limited. Exchange of protein for carbohydrates has been shown to improve blood lipids, and in epidemiologic studies, higher protein diets have been associated with lower blood pressure and reduced risk of coronary heart disease. Although the optimal amount and sources of protein cannot be determined at this time, the weight of evidence suggests that in dietary practice, it may be beneficial to partially replace refined carbohydrate with protein sources that are low in saturated fat. In summary, a good protein nutrition is essential for body muscle mass and essential amino acids. In addition, high protein intake seems to have an effect on weight loss and weigh maintenance due to its effect on satiety and thermogenesis. However, a careful selection of the protein foods should be made, as the high-protein foods are also generally high in fat, for example red meat such as beef and pork. If the diet has to be modified by including high-protein foods, the selection criteria should include plant-protein food sources, such as soy, beans, pulses, as they are generally low in fat. The good sources of animal proteins are fish and chicken as they are in general low in saturated fat and high in unsaturated fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids. References: 1. Halton H. and Hu F. How to Get Rid of Tummy Fat Fast

By Leonard Rogalski It has happened to all of us, we put on a few pounds then a special occasion comes up, like a wedding or a reunion and when we go and try and on that dress that we bought a year ago, because it was on sale, that is just perfect for the occasion, we find that it is too-tight. In this article, how to get rid of tummy fat fast, I am going to lay out steps that anyone, man or woman, can use to be able to fit into that special outfit, however, there is one catch, this is not a long term plan, simply one to be used for times when you need to lose a few pounds in a hurry! O.K. lets get started! One more thing for the sake of this article Im going to assume you have a week to drop the extra weight you need to for the special occasion outfit to fit, if you have more time, great, however if you have less, do not despair these tips will still work you just wont lose as much weight. The first tip is simple and you can start doing it right now, simply stand up straight (you can also do it seating as well) and take a deep breath through your nose now let it all out through your mouth, and imagine you are trying to zip up that tight dress or pair of pants. Suck in your stomach as far as you can, hold it for a count, and then let go. This simple movement works the transverse abdominal muscle (which is the deepest of the six abdominal muscles) and when done regularly, especially right after getting up in the morning before youve eaten can reduce your waist by up to one inch! Its not magic, just the fact that your working those muscles. You can also do this movement throughout the day, and I would recommend this if you are in a hurry to lose as much as you can around your waist, however if you are looking for the most bang for your tummy-flattening-buck do your deep breathing/stomach vacuums first thing in the morning. Start off doing only a few and work up until you are doing about 5-10 minutes worth in the morning. An added benefit of doing this movement is that it helps to condition the upper abs as well. Also, this a good method to remind yourself not to over-eat, whenever you find your self, craving or reaching for something, you know you should have, suck your stomach in 5-10 times, this serves a duel purpose, first it will help get your mind off food and second it will help to remind you of what you are doing all this for. The second tip is to go on a low carb diet, the reason being that this will cause you to lose excess water which should make you a little bit smaller. The simplest way to do this is just to cut out all sweets and breads and eat basically meat, salads, and vegetables for the week. As I said above it may not be the healthiest thing to do, but you should be o.k. if you only do it for one week or so. My last tip is simply to try and walk as much as possible, I know this does not sound like much, but when you just start on a low carb diet and are stressed as it is about the special occasion the last thing you need is to start a full blown exercise program. And besides walking burns calories and can be fit in anytime, on the treadmill, during a lunch hour, and before and after work. When you are trying to squeeze in a special outfit, every ounce of movement helps. I hope you enjoyed how to get rid of tummy fat fast, but please remember, losing weight fast is never a good idea, it is best to always lose it slowly. Failing the Bar Exam

By Noah Michaels If you’ve already failed the bar exam, you’re at least in good company. The most notorious of which is probably Kathleen Sullivan, a veritable legal superstar whose failure made national news. Ms. Sullivan’s credentials are a mile long: former Dean of Stanford Law School, former Harvard Law School professor, she has argued in front of the U.S. Supreme Court several times and is widely considered a potential nominee for Supreme Court Justice. Did I mention she wrote the casebook we used in law school? But the illustrious company we repeat-takers keep is by no means limited to Ms. Sullivan. John F. Kennedy, Jr. failed the New York bar exam twice, the second time earning the headline, “Hunk Flunks” on the front page of the New York Times. Hillary Clinton failed the D.C. bar exam. Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch failed once and former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley failed twice. Charlie Crist, Attorney General and Gubernatorial candidate for Florida, failed the exam twice. Former California Governor Jerry Brown managed to pass on his second attempt, while former Governor Pete Wilson did not pass until his fourth attempt. Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio R. Villaraigosa, never did pass the bar after failing four exams. The California Bar Exam is one of, if not the most difficult in the nation. California has an exclusionary bar: instead of just screening out people who are incompetent, the exam aims to regulate and limit the number of lawyers in the state. The competition to practice law in California, the seventh largest economy in the world, is fierce. In 2004, only 44% of the 12,448 California bar exam applicants passed and in 2005 only 46% of 12,863 passed. So, what can we learn from these famous people who have failed the bar exam, besides the fact that misery loves company? Actually, their advice is nearly unanimous. Study even harder for the next exam. Studying for the next bar exam? Mediterranean Diet Plan

By Kevin Stith Healthy living is a treasured wealth that does not come on its own. It has to be planned. Food plays a vital role in providing essential nutrients for growth and development of the body. While some foods are considered healthy and are required in large quantities, others may be exempt from a daily diet. This is how a Mediterranean diet plan works. The Mediterranean diet is considered to be the most suitable form of healthy diet. Researchers have proved that the secret of healthy living of people in the Mediterranean region can be attributed to their balanced diet and active life style. Studies have also shown that this diet not only lowers chronic heart diseases but also improves life expectancy. The Mediterranean diet is considered to be the most suitable form of healthy dieting. Researchers have proved that the secret of healthy living of people in the Mediterranean region can be attributed to their balanced diet and active life style. Studies have also shown that this diet not only lowers chronic heart diseases but also improves life expectancy. The Mediterranean diet is a health plan that helps to maintain optimal weight per the height of an individual and reduce the possibilities of heart diseases, diabetes and gallstones. Today’s lifestyles show that most people prefer to eat foods that are processed, canned or tinned containing saturated fats and sugar. Lifestyles also show that most people do not take time out to exercise. As a result, many people are obese and unhealthy with an increased chance for heart diseases, diabetes and cancers. The Mediterranean diet plan does not eliminate the types of food one consumes. The diet recommends wise food choices. For instance, one should eat fresh fruit and vegetables in place of tinned and frozen products. The diet plan is founded on the Mediterranean diet pyramid. According to it, food products to be included in a daily diet are cereals, grains, bread, vegetables, legumes, beans, fruit and nuts. These products are nutritious and a rich source of carbohydrates, fibers, vitamins, minerals and proteins. The suggested low to moderate intake of milk, yogurt and cheese eliminates an excessive intake of saturated fats. Animal meat like chicken and eggs are to be eaten on a weekly basis and red meat, a few times a month. Fish is identified as a better option, as it is high in nutritional value. Good fat is provided by olive oil, known to control blood cholesterol level and maintaining a healthy heart. All these suggested in the Mediterranean diet plan matches with a standard diet guideline. The food intake is balanced by an active physical life. This is not to say that people in the Mediterranean region did not find time to rest. In fact, they utilized the time after every meal to relax and socialize, unconsciously giving time for proper digestion and good health. Mediterranean Diets provides detailed information about Mediterranean diets, Mediterranean diet benefits, Mediterranean diet cook books and more. Diet Programs – Choose The Right One For You

By Sean Kaye The number of diet programs in the marketplace seems to be endless. Walk into any bookstore and visit the health section and youre liable to walk away with your head spinning. Some are simply hype, while others provide good quality information. This article serves as an aid to help you choose the right weight loss program that is right for you. The first step in this process is to consult your physician, especially if you have any prior or existing health conditions or if you are currently taking any medications. There are some medications that can increase their actions or be nullified by some foods. Some disease conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension can be very volatile depending on the foods you eat. And finally, if you plan to incorporate an exercise program, your doctor needs to know, as he may need to tell you what your limitations are. A good diet plan is going to require a reduction in calories but shouldnt forbid any food or food groups. Although some foods or food groups will be strictly reduced. Slow and steady weight loss should be your goal. Losing weight too fast can be very dangerous. Many studies indicate that one to one and a half pounds of fat per week are about all the human body can accomplish. Losing much more than this and you are likely losing lean body mass (or muscle mass). Some diet programs will result in losing a lot of excess water the first couple of weeks, which will be normal and will show up on the scales (and probably get you excited). You should then taper off to the above-mentioned amounts. You should also plan to keep the weight off after you have reached your goal. This means that going back to your old habits will get your body back to its old condition. Dont buy into the silly marketing gimmick slogan of our diet will help you lose weight and keep it off. Lets think about this: no matter what the diet is, if you stop the diet (even if youve met your goals) and return to the eating habits that made you overweight in the first place, then do you honestly think that the weight will stay off because of the diet plan? Of course not! There is not a diet plan in existence that keeps the weight off if you go back to your old eating habits. Also, please do not think there are any diet pills in existence that will magically shed the pounds away. They DO NOT exist and never willthe human body simply was not designed that way. Improving your eating habits is the only successful way to lose weight. And yes, Im even including these new drugs hitting the market that were developed by multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical research companies. And even if they are somewhat successful, why dump these synthetic chemicals into your body when following a good diet plan is much better and works every time. The remaining steps to finding the right diet program for you is basically what your preferences are that you need to succeed. Many programs offer individual counseling and/or group classes. Some diet programs follow specific regimens and even require you to keep daily meal logs. Some will require you to purchase their food and supplements. You should make sure that the particular diet program you are considering will not be harmful to you. Check with your physician to verify this. Any costs associated with a diet plan will also need to be considered. Costs such as attendance/membership fees, supplement purchases, specific food purchases, follow-up programs and any medical testing are all potential expenses, so be sure you find these out before hand. Lastly, you will want to check with other members that have tried this program before. They can offer great insight on the programs success rate and the difficulty level of following the plan. The decision to lose weight is a great decision that could literally save your life. The right diet plan can mean the difference between a successful journey or just another failed attempt to get rid of those unwanted extra pounds. If You’re Eating High Protein Be Informed about Mad Cow

By Kathryn Martyn, M.NLP Finding Mad Cow in Oregon puts a new wrinkle in the high protein diet, doesn’t it? What’s a person to do that wants to eat more meat, not less? Are you Eating Less Meat Due to Mad Cow Disease? Not the people I’ve spoken with. Most are saying, “Yipee, beef’s on sale!” The food industry has done a great job of convincing us they are providing a safe food supply and we’ve been lulled into a false sense of security. Nothing could be further from the truth. In July 1988, a ban was introduced in the UK which prohibited the use of the remains of sheep in cattle feed. BSE is thought to have spread to cattle from feed including meat and bone meal made from sheep suffering from a similar brain disease, called scrapie. Ban Not Properly Enforced Unfortunately the ban was not enforced properly for many years and remained a paper exercise (exactly as it has been in the US ever since). Francis Anthony, a Herefordshire veterinary surgeon, and the British Veterinary Association’s spokesman on BSE said, “If the ban had been enforced properly from the start, I have no hesitation in saying categorically that we should be seeing only a few cases today. But that contaminated feed was being given to animals until at least 1995, and possibly a year later.” The false sense of security for us in the US came from it being widely reported that the practice had been banned. They failed to make it clear that this was a “voluntary ban.” Even I falsly believed they had long ago ended this practice until the recent news reports that it is still being done. Despite there being a clear connection between feeding rendered animals to animals causing Mad Cow disease, the meat and dairy industry continues the practice to this day. Why? Corporate greed, plain and simple. It is a cheap source of “protein” and makes cows and other animals fatten faster. A fatter animals weighs more, and they are sold by weight. I have no doubt that people in the US aren’t getting excited about the threat or beginning to avoid beef simply because no people have been reported with the disease. After all, this was a sick cow, not a human. Hence, people do not consider it a direct threat. Amazingly they don’t consider those with CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) a varient of Mad Cow as being related when clearly it is. The Costs of Clean Meat Supply The meat and dairy industry will now begin a campaign to make the higher cost of clean meat seem a ridiculous indulgence rather than a possibly life saving measure. It does cost more to have a clean food supply. I and my family are worth it, are you and yours? For excellent reference materials read Fast Food Nationby Eric Schlosser, The Crazy Makers by Carol Simontacchi, and Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth from the Cattle Rancher who Won’t Eat Meat by Howard F. Lyman. Be informed then make the choice for you and your family. Food politics aside, I’m interested in my and my families health and well being, and I’m not interested in supporting an industry that doesn’t care about the quality of their products or whether those products are potentially dangerous or even deadly. What You Can Do to Avoid Dangerous Meat Buy all your meat from the local butcher. He gets the animals from local farmers, and can tell you which Farms, if you ask. Buy all your meat from local stores that certify it is grain fed. Visit sites such asEatWild.com Cut back on your consumption of all meat in general, substituting beans for instance for protein. Eat a “special occasion” steak at the best restaurants such as Ruth Chris’ Steak House. Now that’s a steak!
